Evonne!! You pointed something out that has been staring me in the face; the pop of primary color! A few years ago (now) it was all about the pop of red, then it shifted to butter yellow and now I’m seeing icy blue accents! These are all primary color adjacent! You are so brilliant!!
Ahh, thank you, Kelly! It was such a fun piece to explore, and I really appreciate these words coming from you. Isn’t it wild when something has been staring us straight in the face all along?
This was such good inspo. I’m getting more comfortable with green pops and sometimes red, and sometimes blue. But lately I’m drawn to the idea of a pop of yellow - which I don’t own. Perhaps it’s time to raid my girls’ wardrobes for something bright! Thanks for the prompt!
Thank you, Meg! I too am gravitating towards yellow. It feels like the right kind of punch we all need this fall. Borrowing from your girls’ closets sounds like the perfect way to test it out.
This was fascinating! I would have never imagined that buyers and fashion insiders generally know this to be true about consumer preferences. And mine are just as you've listed! Always buy the thing in blue. Scatter red here and there. I honestly never, ever look at anything yellow unless it's for my kids but now...hmmm.... y'never know!
Jen, thank you! Blue is always my anchor, too, and red’s the easy spice. And yellow… well, that’s the troublemaker shade with my skin tone, but I keep finding myself drawn to it this fall. Glad I got you thinking differently about these colors.
I just bought a vintage navy blue YSL harrington jacket before I read this and I was like yes, this really made so much sense why I chose a blue instead of green (a colour I always love and choose). Indeed like you said, I wanted something that adapts and fits into every look.
Elaine, that sounds like such a great find! A vintage navy YSL jacket is basically the definition of timeless. I love that you went for blue instead of green; it really is the shade that bends and adapts to every look without losing its punch. Sounds like the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
I loved thissss!! The blue and white stripe dress w the yellow jacket - omg! I love a pop of these primary colors so much. These color combos are elite!!
Thank you, Traci! I could not agree more that these color combos are elite. The blue and white stripe with the yellow jacket totally deserves its own red carpet moment.
Ha! Who knew I was ahead of the curve. My closet is awash with blues, reds, and yellows. I rely heavily on blue. Along with black, navy is my main neutral. And as a fair skinned blue eyed brunette, most blues are good for me. Red is my favorite color, in almost all of its iterations. Finally yellow, bright or more mustardy is mostly an accent color. Even my winter parka is highlighter yellow.
As someone who is consistently asked to color and play tic tac toe in every kids menu under the sun, I loved this! Color- esp these primaries- is so fun to play with, esp in the fall, which can otherwise feel moody.
Sogole, thank you for your kind words! Let me guess, do you dominate tic tac toe with a red crayon? You best believe I am for sure pumping up the volume with primaries this fall. Those moody tones will just have to sit on the sidelines for now.
A true musings of a merchandiser post and so spot on for color. I'm curious if the butter yellow trend has increased yellow buys - I always bought yellow with an eyedropper to lift the assortment since ST% tended to be on the lower end. The imagery is incredible as always - balloon skirts ftw :)
Tina, thank you so much! You nailed it with the eyedropper analogy. Yellow has always been that careful lift color in assortments. I am so surprised butter yellow has stayed around this long, but I just got back from an overseas trip, and it is still thriving there, too. I am loving the richness of marigold and mustard yellow as the new transitional yellows this season.
Kate! I love that blue and red are already your go-to pops. Yellow will be such a fun one to layer in because it has that same punch but feels unexpected. I cannot wait to see how you style it.
Jordyn! Thank you, so happy to hear this! I love how much unexpected pizzazz these colors bring and how quickly they connect with shoppers and readers like you.
I love how you break it all down - red and yellow are totally missing from my wardrobe and this is giving me some food for thought. You found some incredible options!!

That Gigi photo in the yellow sweater in the red lip is going to be my fall spirit animal - great read!
Stopped me dead in my Pinterest scroll too, Libby. So good!
I'm absolutely feeling a pop of yellow right now although in the past it's been my least favourite colour... a girl has the right to change her mind 😇
Absolutely! Get it gurl!

Thank you, Evonne! Can't wait to style it. Especially after getting inspired by your blue palette here.

You are ahead of the curve, Maryse! Blues, reds, and a highlighter yellow parka, oh my. That is a lineup I would love to raid.

Live for a color report and this one has my three favorites!!! So good, Evonne!
Lindsay! That means so much coming from you. No wonder this palette feels so right; it has your stamp of approval all over it.
Love all these color stories!
Thank you so much, Alex!
My favorite pop of colors have been blue and red! I’m just so obsessed. This was the inspiration I needed 🤩
I’m going to have to explore this yellow color now because it is gorgeous

its sooo true. love the merchant spin on it and what the primary colors signal to a consumer.

Loving this!! Love all the yellow and red inspo. Love the polo and track pant 😍
GINNY! This means so much coming from you. Thank you! I am dying for those red track pants myself.
I love how you break it all down - red and yellow are totally missing from my wardrobe and this is giving me some food for thought. You found some incredible options!!
Aww, thank you, Emily! Yellow and Red are part of our itinerary on Friday and I can’t wait to explore this together 👭
Oooooo yes please!
