This feels like a “get off my lawn” comment, but I don’t get the boom boom era — I am all for over the top, albeit not for minimalist me, but it’s the 60’s and 70’s that will forever reign supreme; having dressed through the lamé and iconography of the 80’s first go around, I just can’t revisit these looks. But your language and insight is spot on as always!
Christine, I’m blushing. Thank you for your kind words, it means so much coming from a talented writer like you! The “get off my lawn” has me laughing out loud, so good. 60s fashion is my favorite too. Give me a matching set from that time frame any day of the week. In sequins? Now we are talking!
As if I wasn't already lusting after that Rachel Antonoff phone dress enough—they have Edie Falco on a campaign?! My kind of brand!!! Awesome write up. Will be visiting Margaritaville unironically next time I'm in NYC!
This is such a fun one!! I love watching all this from afar but personally this aesthetic doesn’t resonate with me. It’s fun to watch the chaos though…!
Thank you, Sogole. The chaos is what makes it sooo good, but I hear ya on the aesthetics being a little too much for certain peeps. However, I think you could rock a fun novelty clutch any day of the week.
1. Cheeseburger in Paradise is lowkey an iconic song. I said what I said.
2. I loved this entire piece. I learned so much!!! The title sucked me right in. As I read your insight I realized how much I am being influenced by the “boom boom” era! This neutral girly has been learning heavily into playful textures (who knew I love sequins and fringe so much?) and powerful colors (turquoise and lime green)!
This gal who once wouldn’t wear a tee shirt in 5th grade my mom bought me because it was bedazzled (very lightly) has truly come so far!
It’s crazy how much we all are being influenced by the “boom boom” era. Suddenly, I also want sequins on everything outside of December. Our 5th grade self’s would have been BFF and shopping next to each other at Limited Too to boot!
Fun morning piece to wake my work brain up with! Enjoyed your attentive eye and straight forward voice of vision as always. 👏🙌 Now on to reviewing textiles all morning!
You hooked me with “the wheels are off.” Truly that made me laugh and set the tone for the whole post. The “boom boom” era is a bit TOO maximal for me, personally, but god do I love it on others.
I’m so glad I can provide some laughter during your morning cup of joy. That comment made my day 💕.
I’m sort of on the fence when it comes to the “boom boom” era too. I ldo love anything sequins and think that it has life outside of December. Maybe the only way to truly embrace it is to tread lightly or with moderation. An experiment maybe worth exploring 🤔
That Cut article is being weirdly literal about a trend that's actually a ton more egalitarian and accessible than "stealth wealth". Quiet luxury and "timeless" capsule wardrobes have always been a trap, pushing consumers to get rid of their stuff only to have to go on a buying spree the moment we (inevitably) realised that this stuff was all just code for boring dressing. The low-key style of the ultra-rich, by design, doesn't translate well for those of us without access to the very top-tier designers and materials. And paring down was framed as environmentally responsible when the really sustainable approach is to keep all the stuff you love until it comes back round half a minute later. I'm thrilled that maximalism is making a comeback.
This was so much fun! I had no idea that Rachel Antonoff uses her parents in her ads - love this fun fact. Also, I'm incredibly intrigued by a Jimmy Buffet bachelorette and want to know more.
Thank you, Tina! Her parents are my favorite part of her ads, too—hilariously iconic.
As for the Jimmy Buffett bachelorette… it was a blast. Heart-shaped sunnies, party hats + drink straws with the bride’s face on them… and the most epic white bedazzled sunglasses for her. Saying we fully committed to the theme would be an understatement. Ha.

Yes! Loved how you broke down the sentiment behind “boom boom”. And my dad is the ultimate Jimmy Buffet fan so I live for a JB reference haha.
JB is the man which makes your dad by default also the man!
Thank you for your thoughtful comment ♥️

Thank you for your kind words, Mary! Edie sealed the deal for me, too. Fully support the unironically Margaritaville pilgrimage. It was a blast.

I’m here for this.
Traci, we are in full agreement! It’s a classic.

GB, what an amazing comment from you. Thank you. Always happy to wake your brain up on Tuesday mornings. Makes my heart happy.
Hope you got to look at some fun “boom boom” textiles this morning 💗
Love Cheeseburgers in Paradise with a side of concrete. 💖
Thanks, Kathleen. It’s so good 💃🏼

I also think the boom boom era is sort of perfect for summer dressing. Like one sort of crazy or silly dress is sort of perfect for the heat, no?

Thank you for the mention 🥹 loved this post x
You are so very welcome. LOVED yours!
Such a good list of so many good things!! 🪩 💃🏽 🤎

Couldn’t agree more. Minimalism was just shopping with better branding. Give me a closet with history, mood swings, and a little chaos any day.
