At 10 weeks old, I acquired a best friend.

We were roughly the same height, with deliciously chubby cheeks and infectious smiles.

We were inseparable.

‘Love-a-Lot’ Bear collected stories, stains, and a little less pink with every adventure. Today, she’s a dusty rose with hints of gray after decades of tears, tantrums, and carrying the weight of the world as a toddler saw it.

The color of a childhood well lived.

If you grew up in the ‘80s, chances are you had a Care Bear you couldn’t sleep without. It’s easy to forget they didn’t start as stuffed animals. They began as greeting cards from American Greetings in 1981 before becoming one of the decade’s biggest toy phenomena. More than 40 million plush bears found homes between 1983 and 1987.

More Than Nostalgia

Last week, Authentic Brands Group announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Care Bears.

For a company best known for fashion and lifestyle brands like Reebok, Brooks Brothers, Nautica, and Forever 21, it marks a surprising expansion into character IP. What Authentic Brands Group is really acquiring isn’t a plush toy. It’s an entertainment platform spanning television, film, consumer products, and licensing around the world.

There has never been a better time to own character IP because brands no longer live in one place. A single character can become a television show, a plush toy, a Target collaboration, and a social media feed all at once. It's hard to think of another asset that can stretch quite that far.

The original ten still have all the ingredients. Distinct colors. Signature motifs. Enduring personalities. The current website tells you everything from their favorite food to their motto. I imagined the rest.

If Care Bears debuted in 2026 instead of 1981, this is how I'd merchandise them.
